Description
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), operated by the University of California under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), is seeking one or more industrial partners to commercialize LLNL's patented compact, lightweight and highly efficient analytical kit for field sampling of chemicals and hazardous agents. The kit is based on solid phase microextraction (SPME) technology, which has been shown to be ideally suited to determining the presence of chemical agents. LLNL Forensic Science Center (FSC) has customized commercially available SPME technology with the addition of sample handling protocols and patented auxiliary components to facilitate safe, rapidly deployable sampling of hazardous compounds. The kit has been field tested for FBI and first responder use. The sampling device, a polymer coated fiber that resides inside the tip of a syringe needle, acts like a "chemical sponge" and allows compound-specific, rapid sampling in seconds with no additional support equipment. "On-fiber" derivatization of polar samples is possible with this fiber. The auxiliary components make the kit rugged and the sampling safe with extremely low risk of contaminating or diluting the sample. The lack of solvents and the auxiliary components limit the toxic waste stream in the field and in the laboratory. Sample analysis of ultra-small samples can be immediate when using gas chromatography, and highly component specific when the gas chromatography is combined with mass spectrometry. Development of this technology was supported by the DOE. This is a licensing opportunity with some flexibility for research and development partnerships. Companies interested in commercializing the field deployable SPME kit should provide a written statement of interest that must include the following information: (1) company name and address, (2) the name, address, telephone number, and fax number of a point of contact, (3) a description of your company's expertise and facilities in the relevant technologies and (4) statement of your company's potential interest in research partnering. This is not a procurement. Statements of interest should be sent to: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Industrial Partnerships and Commercialization Office, P.O. Box 808, L-795, Livermore, CA 94551 Attention: CBD-01-007. Please provide your written statement within thirty (30) days from the date this announcement is printed to ensure consideration of your response.
