Description
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases is seeking support to obtain group A Streptococcus research materials. The contractor will be required to provide, per year (i) patient specimens from at least 30 acute rheumatic fever patients and their family members, (ii) patient specimens and bacterial cultures from at least 20 patients with invasive GAS infections, and (iii) patient specimens and bacterial cultures from at least 80 pediatric patients with GAS pharynigitis, The patients must be drawn from one metropolitan area in the United States with an acute rheumatic fever case rate in excess of the national average. The contractor must have demonstrated success of (i) enrolling patients in rheumatic fever studies; (ii) obtaining basic epidemiologic and clinical data from human subjects; and (iii) handling surveillance databases that include bacterial strain information electronically linked to patient information. The contractor must have fully integrated facilities that include an operational CLIA-certified diagnostic microbiology laboratory, administrative center, and serology laboratory. The contractor shall have demonstrated ability to diagnose acute rheumatic fever and acquire blood and other samples from patients with this disease, and their parents and siblings. The contractor should have demonstrated ability to electronically track relevant patient and family data, and electronically link study subject information and specimen information. The contractor will be required to provide personnel with proven task-appropriate medical, microbiologic, and serologic expertise. The contractor will be required to arrange and conduct periodic meetings between facility personnel and NIAID investigators. The contractor will be required to transport biologically hazardous material from local sites to NIAID facilities. It is anticipated that this RFP will result in a cost reimbursement type contract with a fixed fee for one base year and up to 6 additional one-year option periods. The RFP will be issued on or about April 24, 2001.
