Description
The Meal, Ready-to-Eat (MRE) is the U.S. Warfighter's lightweight, self-contained operational ration, consisting of a full meal packed in a flexible meal bag. Each MRE contains a retort-pouch entree and numerous components, providing 1300 Kilocalories (13% protein, 36% fat, and 51% carbohydrates). An industrial base is maintained to produce the MRE, a warstopper item. The annual peacetime minimum procurement is 2.1 Million cases (12 MREs/case), obtained through numerous contracts totaling approximately $121 Million. The peacetime contracts include required surge option clauses. The current MRE contracts (MRE 20) run through March 2001. The next program year (MRE 21) requires production from April 2001 through January 2002. The Defense Supply Center Philadelphia (DSCP) continually evaluates the current industrial base, acquisition approaches, Supply Chain Management Alternatives (e.g. CFM vs GFM, alternate distribution channels, and make and store options) and industry interest in this program. DSCP seeks industry interest in participating in the MRE acquisition program. Interested parties should forward information that addresses their interest, capabilities, and Best Value acquisition recommendations.
