THIS IS A MODIFICATION TO SUBMISSION NO. 496285 DATED SEPTEMBER 13, 2000. 1. SPAWAR Systems Center, Charleston, SC, Code 315 is seeking vendor sources that can provide a self contained radio frequency data link between a remote field location and a base station in Antarctica. The throughput requirement for the system is to transfer automatic weather station (AWS) data, once every 15 minutes, and return control signals to the (AWS) upon command. The AWS data requires the communications link to support duplex serial operation (RS-232/ RS-422), error free, at data rates from 4800 to 9600 baud. Any communication component, with the exception of the base station, must include a self-sustaining power source. The base station itself can be considered to have standard 60Hz power. Note that sunlight is continuously available throughout the desired seasonal operating period or annually from September to February. The operating temperature ranges from 40 degrees Celsius to +10 degrees Celsius while sustaining winds range from 0 to 100 Knots. The distance from base station to the valley-locked AWS is 150 miles through mountainous terrain. There is, however, a mountain close to the location that has been used in the past as a voice communications repeater site that has 120 mile direct line-of-site to the base station. It is essential that any information provided addresses physical size and estimated maintenance requirements due to the logistical constraints of the system.
