Demilitarization Symposium & Exhibition, May 17-21, 1999, Tulsa
Convention Center and Adam's Mark Hotel, Tulsa, Oklahoma and McAlester
Army Ammunition Plant (AAP), McAlester, Oklahoma. The Joint Ordnance
Commanders Group (JOCG) requested the organization of a seminar to
assure linkage among the numerous efforts directed at challenges
related to the demilitarization and disposal of energetic materials.
The scope of this effort is to broadband with participation by
government, academia and United States and international industry
representatives. Demilitarization/environmental issues are a concern
affecting all ammunition programs. This symposium will be of particular
benefit to individuals involved in demilitarization/environmental
issues associated with energetic materials. The John L. Byrd, Jr.
Memorial Award for Excellence in Munitions Demilitarization will be
presented to the 1999 Winner. Mr. James Q. Wheeler, Director, Defense
Ammunition Center; Chairman, JOCG Demilitarization &Disposal Subgroup
and Chairman, Demilitarization Section, Munitions Technology Division,
National Defense Industrial Association will call the symposium to
order. Mr. Anthony Melita, Director, Office of Munitions, Office of the
Secretary of Defense will give the Welcome Address. The Keynote Address
will be given by Major General Joseph W. Arbuckle, Commanding General,
U.S. Army Industrial Operations Command. The U.S. Army Materiel
Command Perspective will be given by Mr. James Hill, Assistant Deputy
Chief of Staff for Ammunition and the Safety Perspective will be given
by Mr. Lewis D. Walker, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army
for Environmental Safety and Occupational Health. Dr Winston Brundige,
Thiokol Propulsion, and Chairman, Industrial Committee of Ammunition
Producers Demilitarization Subcommittee will give the Industry
Perspective. Mr. Peter Courtney-Green, NATO Maintenance & Supply Agency
will Review the European Demilitarization Industry and Ms. Gabriela
Coman-Enescu, Organisation forthe Prohibition of Chemical Weapons will
make a presentation on "The Chemical Weapons Convention and the
Disposal of Old and Abandoned Chemical Weapons". There will be numerous
other technical presentations. On Friday, May 21 there will be a tour
of McAlester AAP and briefings on it's demilitarization activities. For
