A -- DEMONSTRATION OF AND ALGORITHMIC DEVELOPMENT FOR QUANTUM COMPUTERS SOL DAAD19-99-R-BAA3 POC ARO Information Line -- (919) 549-4375 WEB: Click here to download a copy of the BAA., http://www.aro.army.mil/research/index.htm. The Physics Division of the US Army Research Office (ARO), together with the National Security Agency, solicits proposals for demonstrative or analytic studies of the possible physical realizations of quantum computers. Research proposals exploring implementations of quantum bits and quantum logic are sought. Experimental explorations should be tightly coupled to theoretical phenomenological studies with the common goal of elucidating the efficacy for implementing quantum logic in a specific physical system. There is also interest in exploring other aspects of quantum computing, especially demonstrations of error correction that result in a net reduction in noise with only moderate increases in storage and processing overhead. Although generic development of error correction protocols is of interest, there is greater interest in tying such efforts to specific physical implementations, especially scalable implementations. Several awards are anticipated and approximately $1.5M is available for the firstyear of this project. Multiple, three-year awards are anticipated. Most theoretical proposals will request less than $150K per year, while most coupled experimental and theoretical proposals will request less than $400K per year. Funding for subsequent years will be contingent on satisfactory performance and availability of funds. Fifteen copies of white papers no more than 10 pages in length outlining the proposed project and a budget estimate should be received at ARO, ATTN: AMSRL-RO-PP (H. Everitt) no later than 4:00 p.m. local time on Wednesday, March 3, 1999. One signed original and 14 copies of full proposals of no more than 40 pages in length will be requested from the proposers who submit the most meritorious white papers. Full proposals should be submitted to ARO, ATTN: AMSRL-RO-RI (99-R-BAA3) and received no later than 4:00 p.m. local time on Tuesday, May 18, 1999. This announcement is available on the Web at the following URL: http://www.aro.army.mil/research/index.htm. Printed copies of this BAA are not available. The technical point of contact for this solicitation is Dr. Henry Everitt (919)549-4369, email: everitt@aro-emh1.army.mil. Posted 02/09/99 (W-SN296556). (0040)
