Q -- MEDICAL SERVICES SOL RFQ9803 DUE 052898 POC Carolyn Sentz, (301)402-2284/Sophia Janus, (301) 402-2284 The Person in this position will be responsible for conducting clinical research on HIV infectiion under the general guidance of the Director, NIAID. Research studies include work on etiology, immunoregulatory defects, complications of, and therapy of human HIV infection. This individual and primary investigators study the success of therapy in primary HIV infection and its associated diseases. Description of duties: Reviews patient charts to collect relevant clinical data such as laboratory test results and social background. Interviews patients to obtain sexual history, medical history, and history use of medications, previous HIV-related symptoms, infections and diseases. Is responsible for maintaining computer databases for data collection. Interprets and is responsible for recognizing results that merit prompt clinical action. This individual will have patient responsibilities in clinic and for inpatients for data collection. Conducts informal counciling sessions for patients to teach them about HIV infection and explain their rights and obligations as research subjects. Discusses symptoms of the disease and its potential for transmission. This requires a comprehensive knowledge of HIV and requires the ability to interpret clinical data in terms which may be understood by the patient as well as interpretations at a level which is conversant with physicians. Receives inquiries from referring physicians, private hospital staff, and patients regarding the diagnosis and treatment of HIV infection and eligibility for research protocols. Refers to primary investigators, attending, and clinic physicians those questions which cannot be answered personally. Coordinates and insures the collection of specimens needed for all studies on patients with HIV infection and normal volunteers. This person will be knowledgeable about specimens needed, timing of collection of specimens, and special factors warranting changing unusual procedures. The person in this position may instruct other personnel in collection, handling, and distribution of research speciments. Maintains contact with patients and referring physicians to explain patient's conditions and symptoms, interprets results of laboratory tests of patients who have participated in the study. Follows-up on patients throughout study to schedule tests, follow-up examinations, transportation, and admissions. Education requirements: Bachelors Degree in Nursing, current U.S.R.N. License in any state, to be accredited in HIV-AIDS care, and two (2) or more years of experience in HIV clinical research. Tour of Duty: Four (4) hours per day Monday through Friday, excluding Federal Holidays, 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Note: Number of hours per day and tour of duty will vary. Estimated number of hours per annum: 860. Location of employment: NIH, Bethesda, Maryland. (0128)
