COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF FEBRUARY 5,1998 PSA#2026

Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division, 9500 MacArthur Blvd., West Bethesda, MD 20817-5700

A -- SOURCES SOUGHT FOR MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY OF SEALABLE CONTAINERS DUE 030998 POC Bill Sutliff (301) 227-5171 The Carderock Division Naval Surface Warfare Center (CDNSWC) seeks sources from industry with the capability to manufacture sealable containers for longterm storage of plastic waste onboard US Navy submarines to comply with Federal and international regulations that will prohibit the disposal of plastic waste at sea. The Navy is currently evaluating low cost, existing-technology approaches that would take advantage of the submarine trash compactor unit to compact all plastic into specially fabricated Trash Disposal Unit (TDU) cans. The existing TDU cans are assembled by hand onboard the submarine from prefabricated sheetmetal, and are 23-in. tall and 9-in. in diameter. The existing TDU cans have many perforations to promote rapid sinking when discharged into the ocean. In order to store food contaminated plastic onboard the submarine for up to 90 days, an effective barrier must be developed to contain the potential ordors that could be generated. One option is to place the plastic filled TDU can into a sealable container that could be impervious to odors during long-term storage. Another option is to use a new sealable TDU can manufactured from odor barrier material. Ideally these sealable containers, or new airtight TDU cans, would be stackable or collapsible for easy storage onboard a submarine prior to use. Potential sources with off-the-shelf technology are requested to document their experience in container manufacturing that might be suitable for the applications specified in this request. The following information should be included with the industry response: potential concepts for sealable containers or new airtight TDU cans, manufacturing techniques, and cost estimates for samples. Responses to this synopsis are requested within 30 days from the date of publication. This synopsis is for information purposes and to identify capable potential offerors. It does not constitute an RFP and is not intended to be construed as a commitment by the Government. There is no information available for release at this time. Submit information to: Bill Sutliff, CDNSWC, Bldg. 60, Code 634, 9500 MacArthur Bldv., West Bethesda, MD 20817-5700. If you have any questions, please call Bill Sutliff at (301)227-5171. (0034)
