81 -- FUNCTIONAL FOOD PACKAGES FOR NUTRITIONAL AND PERFORMANCE ENHANCING SUPPLEMENTS SOL DAAK60-96-U-0004 DUE 121595 POC Contract Specialist NELDA CASAVANT (508) 233-4029 (Site Code DAAK60) This Command is conducting a market survey to identify sources that have commercially available functional packages for performance enhancing military ration components. The components include a solid, high carbohydrate 'sport' or energy bar (serving size 65g), and a carbohydrate beverage powder (serving size 45g) that requires the addition of 12 ounces of water. The objective is to enhance the consumption of these components through 'functional packaging' which may include lightweight, compact, durable, easy-to-open, easy to reclose, and easy to eat, drink or dispense from packages. A ''drink-from-package'' feature is particularly important for the beverage powder component. Packages must be printable with visually appealing graphics and informative verbiage (i.e., nutritional facts) selected by the Army. The packages must be capable of providing components with the military-required three year shelf life at 80 degrees F. The packages must be readily available in the United States and relatively low cost in comparison to similar commercial packages.
