Description

Statement of Need OLYMPUS SPEECH PATH VIDEO SYSTEM Purpose: The VA Pittsburgh Speech Pathology is in need of 1 Olympus Endoscopy system to be used for Trans-Nasal Endoscopy to perform both fiber optic endoscopic evaluations and swallowing (FEES) and Videostroboscopies. Scope: The Olympus systems are needed to integrate and standardize along with the Ear Nose and Throat department existing Olympus systems that are used for the same purposes. These 2 departments work together to provide care for specific veterans, and it is imperative that the equipment is the same and uniform within the 2 departments. The proposed Olympus system is capable of serving both FEES and Videostroboscopy procedures which are used in the evaluation and treatment of swallowing and voice disorders, respectively. Trans nasal esophagoscopy is a safe and inexpensive way to examine the esophagus in patients at risk for esophageal cancer and other disorders. n the FEES procedure, a flexible endoscope is introduced trans nasally to the patient s pharynx where the clinician can clearly view laryngeal and pharyngeal structures and their functions.
