Description
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Research and Development Center (ERDC), Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory (GSL) intends to issue a sole source award to Quanser Consulting, Inc. for the Quanser Shake Table III XY Advanced Research Workstation for a high-powered planar earthquake simulator ideal for more advanced dynamics and multi dynamics analysis and research relating to earthquake loss reduction. Quanser's shake table has capabilities for research efforts needed for the Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory which cannot be found in any comparable offering in the market. The Research and Development approach is to simulate in-site dynamic loading conditions for a variety of military-based seismic sources (e.g. blast loads, underground explosions, tunneling, etc.) to study the actual soil behavior and physics to then improve complex numerical simulations. Research and validation of soil dynamic behavior must be completed via physical testing. A multi-axis shake table is required to simulate real life conditions and dynamics. The uniqueness of the solution is found in the self-contained yet open architecture nature of the device which makes it appropriate for the type of high fidelity research conducted by ERDC. This is the only solution that meets the payload, acceleration and workspace, dual-axial range of motion, software and budgetary requirements as specified by the geotechnical and structures research group. In addition, this shake table increases lab capabilities to offer solutions to problems where field testing would not be possible, plausible, or practical. Further uniqueness about the solution can be found in its inherent modularity. The Shake Table III system is designed to be modular allowing for the addition of more tables in the future that would open the door to more research areas. For example multiple shake table III's can be operated in various configurations for multi-node excitation research, suspended structure analysis, etc. No other Shake Table solution in the market has this inherent modularity in their design.
