We are requesting the acquisition of Natus Viking on Nicolet EDX system to be centrally housed in the Philadelphia VAMC research building. This system is a electrodiagnostic platform capable of evaluating functional recovery following sensorimotor brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerve injury and regeneration. The Nicolet EDX can complete wide range of electrophysiological assessments including nerve conduction, electromyography, intraoperative monitoring, and evoked potentials. As one of the most commonly used clinically-available electrodiagnostic platforms, clinicians, researchers, and technicians interested in preclinical nerve regeneration research will be able to quickly perform experiments without compromising research quality. The system is completely housed on a mobile cart that both increases ease of operation and reduces the risk for damage. Purchase includes installation, 1 year manufactures warranty, and a 3-day training session performed by Natus clinical expert. These features will enable a wide range of VA researchers to benefit from the device's unique capabilities including scientists studying regenerative medicine in a variety of disciplines including neurology, neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, pain management rehabilitation, orthopedic surgery, plastic surgery, and cardiology. The requesting scientists investigate a broad range of translational therapies with substantial benefit for veterans, including tissue engineering strategies for peripheral nerve injury, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, stroke, epilepsy, and muscular skeletal damage. In addition, the Viking EDX provides automatic analysis, which will allow researchers to easily and quickly complete experiments, expanding its benefit to an even broader range of translational research. This instrument will provide a major contribution to the VA's long-term research goals, impacting a wide range of translational research at the Philadelphia VAMC by increasing access to a clinically-available electrodiagnostic tool and speeding the development of many critical therapies. Scope. The contractor will provide a clinical-grade electrodiagnostic platform capable of evaluating functional recovery for sensorimotor brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerve injury and regeneration research experiments. The equipment will include the following unique characteristics: 1.High resolution for saved traces in NCS. Viking EDX can save 1920 data points whereas Cadwell, a direct competitor, can only save 640. Due to poor time resolution, the velocity and latency difference values can change significantly. 2. Multiple time bases in needle EMG. The combination of slow and fast sweeps allow operator see the details of a potential and its discharge pattern. 3. Natus provides advanced automated muscle analyses, such as motor unit number index, compound muscle action potential scan. 4. Automatic data storage. (No need to push the 'Store' button after each accepted signal. 5. On-line reporting. Immediate review of the entire investigation 6. Reference guide for muscle anatomy. Shows the needle insertion site, cross sectional anatomy using real subject, rather than models. 7. True Analog sound (No modification through equalizer).
