- The Smithsonian Institution intends to issue a Request for Proposals (RFP) to General Contractors to construct improvements to the Bird House at the National Zoological Park, including demolition and construction of the area north of the Bird House; demolition of existing partitions; renovation, removal and reinstallation of historic concrete arch; structural demolition, bracing, shoring, and underpinning new work; construction of the new entrance additiona and renovation of the entire existing Bird House Building; structural improvements to the Great Flight Aviary Bridge; relocation and reinstallation of outdoor ‘back of house’ support spaces, including animal holding and related support functions; installation of temporary boilers, electrical life support for the Flamingo Habitat. The value of this scope of work is roughly estimated to be $29-34M. The RFP is anticipated to be available in early May. Interested companies must meet the following minimum qualifications in order to be considered: a. Have worked on at least three projects of comparable size and complexity, including all of the following requirements: a. Renovations to listed, nationally significant, and/or historic structures of comparable size and complexity. For the purpose of clarification, “listed, nationally significant and/or historic structure” means a historic structure listed on a local, state or federal register, or as a local, state or national historic landmark. b. Work on a campus setting. c. Work on operations-critical mechanical components; and d. Work on an occupied structure.
