Description
RFI Future Air Force operating concepts require low cost systems and systems of systems to find, fix, track, and target critical mobile targets in Area-Denied (AD) airspaces where high valued aircraft would be at significant risk. To achieve this, very low cost platforms and sensor suites are needed. The AF plans to explore the design, manufacturing and performance trade space for low cost sensors which are compatible with low cost, attritable, and expendable platforms. Many relatively low cost platform concepts are in various stages of development now that may address these use cases, but development of complementary low cost (yet mission capable) payloads lag behind. This is a recognized need throughout the DoD ISR community, and many entities are working on various approaches ranging from novel low cost sensor R&D efforts to leveraging of COTS and GOTS assets. DoD/Air Force may also be able to leverage nonmilitary application technologies in law enforcement, border patrol, geo survey, and recreational use. Opportunities exist for improving the cost, size, weight, and power (CSWaP) of sensor systems stemming from relaxed limited-life requirements and include reduced sustainment/reliability/durability requirements. Tradeoffs are needed for design and manufacturing development and capability vs cost tradeoff curves are needed to better assess existing and new capabilities. This is a Request for Information (RFI) and not a solicitation. Responders to this RFI should have already demonstrated or be in the process of developing low cost sensor systems that are 1) results of COTS/GOTS component adaptation, 2) results of cost saving adaptations of military specific sensor technologies, or 3) results of unique new sensor technologies specifically designed for low cost ISR sensing.
