- Amendment #1: Includes a map to the site. The purpose of the Crooked Creek Mechanical project is to remove rocky mountain juniper, and ponderosa pine encroachment to improve sage brush steppe health, improve wildlife habitat and reduce the risk of severe wildfire. Project area is approximately 1,100 acres in size located in the Missouri Breaks, in the Crooked Creek Watershed, approximately 40 miles northeast of Roy Montana. The project area consists of sagebrush steppe, with rocky mountain juniper, and ponderosa pine encroachment. Fuel loadings range from less than one (1) ton per acre to as high as ten (10) tons per acre. The method that will be used to accomplish the objectives is mechanical treatment by hand with chainsaws: Lop and Scatter. Because of the scattered nature of the vegetation, not all acres within the established boundaries of the unit will require the same amount of labor. No salvage will be allowed.
