Description
The California Institute of Technologys Jet Propulsion Laboratory (Caltech/JPL), operating under a prime contract with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), is seeking potential contractors to provide science cameras for a CubeSat for use on a future Deep Space mission. Caltech/JPL located at 4800 Oak Grove Drive Pasadena, CA 91109 is issuing the subject Request for Information (RFI) to obtain information to assess current manufacturing capabilities and receive ROM cost and schedule estimates for the design, development and build of a Science Camera for a CubeSat. JPL is currently planning a mission to acquire scientific images of a near Earth asteroid. Science objectives include geological mapping at regional and local scales, volume estimation, rotation characterization, and target color type identification. Operational goals are not released at this time. In support of this mission, JPL is looking to procure a Science Camera, which either meets or can readily be adapted to meet the requirements listed in Attachment 1. This Science Camera should be at a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of 6 or higher (system model or prototype demonstration in relevant environment). That is, they should be ready for low-risk flight mission qualification. The mission will operate in deep space regime at 1AU and will have a nominal lifetime of 2.5 years. Criteria important for this application are: volume, performance, maturity of design/heritage, simple interfaces. Also designs that minimize geometric and chromatic distortions are preferred. RESPONDING TO THE RFI: Responses to the RFI should include: (1) Name and primary point of contact for the response; (2) Company represented by the primary point of contact; (3) Phone number and E-Mail address; (4) The proposed part number and product literature, if available; and (6) A summary describing the relevant testing and flight pedigree associated with the part. RFI QUESTIONS: JPL is requesting responses to the following questions: (1) Please provide a short description of the product operation, mass, physical dimensions, preferred operating temperature, raw data output, and any flight heritage. Mass and dimensions should specify the breakdown between electronics, detector head, optics, and baffle (if any); (2) Are there any requirements listed for this camera that the proposed device does not currently meet? Please describe the technical risk associated with potential design changes required to meet these requirements; (3) Provide the system metrics: f-number, aperture diameter, focal plane pixel pitch, quantum efficiency curve between 400 and 900nm, read noise at shortest integration, dark current (e-/s/pixel) at 300K, full well depth, Analog-to-Digital Units, system Q at a wavelength of 550nm, Strehl ratio of the optics, end to end optical transmittance. Geometric and chromatic aberration. Operating temperature range, non-operating temperature range; (4) What is the input power and voltage: while idle, during visible imaging, color imaging, processing? (5) How many identical products has your company produced? (6) How many similar products has your company produced? (7) What types of input and output interface protocols are compatible with this device? (8) What is the strategy for measuring surface material color in four or more channels? (9) What is the expected sensor degradation after 2.5 years in deep space with a radiation dose up to 25 Krad? (10) Does the device include its own compression and processing capability? What type of software, operating system, and type of implementation (e.g., FPGA) does it use? (11) What are the dimensions of the sun keep -out and glint-free zones? (12) How long would it take to deliver a Flight Unit and Engineering Model (EM) unit suitable for use in a ground test bed? What is the cost of such an EM model? And (13) What types of environmental and performance testing are performed prior to delivery? RESPONSE DEADLINE AND INQUIRES: Response to this RFI must be submitted no later than March 5, 2014. Submissions will be accepted as an E-Mail attachment only, and all responses should be sent to Subcontracts Manager Michael Jacobs at Michael.H.Jacobs@jpl.nasa.gov with Science Camera RFI Response in the subject line. Any inquiries regarding this RFI should also be directed to Michael Jacobs. An E-Mail confirmation will be sent to the designated point of contact within one (1) week of receipt of the submission. Do not provide any proprietary data to JPL in response to this RFI. DISCLAIMER: The requested information is for preliminary planning purposes only and does not constitute a commitment, implied or otherwise, that JPL will solicit you for such a procurement in the future. Neither JPL nor the Government will be responsible for any costs incurred by you in furnishing this information.
