- Description
- This is a modification to the sources sought synopsis entitled, 'Interim CryogenicPropulsion Stage (SLS-SPIO-2012)', which was posted on January 9, 2012. The purpose ofthis modification is to respond to questions submitted to date. The followingquestions/answers are provided:Question 1 (four parts):What is the delta-V repartition between burns? Approximately 100 meters/second (m/s), 2900 m/s, <50 m/s required to safely dispose ofstage.Could the mission be accomplished with a single, long burn? No.If not, what drives the number of burns? At least three separate engine burns are needed to achieve the first two SLS missions;LEO orbit perigee raise burn, trans-lunar injection (TLI), and disposal. What is the typical duration of ballistic phases between burns?50-270 minutes between the first and second burn, and TBD minutes between the second andthird burn.Question 2:Total weight: Is this the total weight of the payload, i.e. what is above thestage?ICPS lift capability in orbit shall be total weight of 24224 kg (53404 lbs) whichincludes crew module, service module, and crew.Question 3:ICPS mass: Empty or loaded mass of the stage?Loaded.Question 4 (two parts):Axial acceleration: Is this requirement applicable for all burns? No.Or are there burns where the MPCV is not attached to the stage?Axial acceleration is not applicable to the final burn because the MPCV is not attached.Question 5 (four parts):Reference mission free lunar return: applicable for flight article 1?Yes.Whats the consequence of this mission for the delta-V repartition between burns?Delta-V repartition between burns is based on the integrated mission assessment. Seeresponse to Question 1 for more details. What is the desired insertion orbit after the ICPS missions?N/A to this request. Can this orbit be achieved through other burn strategy than the one in therequirements?Yes with additional burns.Question 6 (four parts):Reference mission HLO:applicable for flight article 2?YesWhats the consequence of this mission for the delta-V repartition between burns?Delta-V repartition between burns is based on the integrated mission assessment. Seeresponse to Question 1 for more details. What is the desired insertion orbit after the ICPS missions?N/A to this request. Can this orbit be achieved through other burn strategy than the one in therequirements?Yes with additional burns.Capability documentation submitted in response to this synopsis may containcompany-sensitive information. The due date for responses is not extended.Documents related to this synopsis, if any, will be available over the Internet.
