Description
NOTE: Classification Code was changed from C to R. The following information is provided in reply to questions from vendors regarding testing requirements: LABORATORY TESTING: Required laboratory testing to be performed by the Contractor on the soil samples obtained from the core drilling operations described above will be specified in the individual task orders covering the drilling, sampling and testing of materials at a specific site or in separate task orders issued after completion of drilling and sampling operations. All designated testing to be performed by the Contractor shall be performed at the Contractor's laboratory and in accordance with the most recent testing procedures defined in the specified ASTM except for bar linear shrinkage, torvane shear and soil salinity tests which shall be performed in accordance with publications identified in Section C, Paragraph 19. The classification of soil samples shall be performed in accordance with ASTM D 2487, "Standard Classification of Soils for Engineering Purposes" (Unified Soil Classification System). All tests shall be performed on portions of the sample that are considered representative of the predominant material contained in the sample. The Government reserves the right to retain soil samples obtained during the core drilling operations for independent testing. TESTING EQUIPMENT: All equipment and apparatus furnished and utilized by the Contractor in performing the designated laboratory tests shall be of approved types and shall be maintained in good repair and within the specified tolerances for laboratory equipment shown in the referenced ASTMs. Equipment shall be calibrated according to established time schedules and inspected by the Contractor to assure proper operation. Equipment that is out of adjustment or tolerance shall not be utilized. The Government reserves the right to periodically inspect the laboratory and testing equipment and to require the adjustment or removal and replacement of unsatisfactory equipment at no additional cost to the Government. The Contracting Officer will have the final determination of whether equipment is satisfactory. LABORATORY PERSONNEL: Laboratory personnel performing the required tests shall be competent personnel, thoroughly familiar with the equipment and testing procedures being utilized and accustomed to good laboratory techniques. The personnel shall be conscientious in the handling and testing of soil samples and shall neatly record all test data produced. The Contracting Officer reserves the right to require the removal and replacement of incompetent personnel and will have the final determination of whether personnel are incompetent. LABORATORY TESTS Tests to be performed by the Contractor shall consist of those listed below, or a combination thereof. a. Visual Classification. To include color, material type, classification in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System (ASTM D 2487), consistency and the presence of secondary constituents and structural features such as laminations, lenses, pockets, partings and slickensides. The consistency of undisturbed cohesive materials shall be determined in the laboratory by taking pocket penetrometer readings in accordance with Section C, Paragraph 9.a. When laboratory test results which would allow positive identification are not prescribed, the classification shall be determined as accurately as possible by visual inspection and by checking laboratory test results of adjacent samples or similar material tested in adjacent borings. b. Moisture Content (Water Content). ASTM D 2216. c. Unit Dry Weight (Dry Density). ASTM D 2937. d. Unit Wet Weight (Wet Density). ASTM D 2937. e. Specific Gravity of Solids. ASTM D 854. f. Liquid Limit - Four Point Test. ASTM D 4318. g. Plastic Limit. ASTM D 4318. h. Bar Linear Shrinkage. In accordance with Texas State Department of Highways and Public Transportation publication, "Manual of Testing Procedures". i. Mechanical Analysis (Grain-Size Analysis). ASTM D 422. Mechanical analyses will be designated as being either abbreviated, or "complete". Abbreviated tests will require the use of the No. 4, No. 10, No. 40 and No. 200 sieves to allow classification of the soil sample in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System. Depending on the largest particle size, complete tests will require the use of all or a portion of the following sieves: 2", 1-1/2", l", 3/4", 3/8", No. 4, No. 8, No. 10, No. 16, No. 20, No. 30, No. 40, No. 50, No. 70, No. 100, No. 140 and No. 200. j. Hydrometer Analysis. ASTM D 422. k. Standard Compaction Test. ASTM D 698. l. Modified Compaction Test. ASTM D 1557. m. Unconfined Compression Test. ASTM D 2166, with stress strain curves. n. Unconsolidated Undrained Compressive Strength of Cohesive Soils in Triaxial Compression (Q) Test (1 specimen). ASTM D 2850. o. Consolidated Undrained Triaxial Compression Test for Cohesive Soils (R-Test) (3 specimens). ASTM D 4767. p. Direct Shear Test. ASTM D 3080. q. One Dimensional Consolidation Properties of Soils. ASTM D 2435. r. Torvane Shear Test. In accordance with Soiltest, Inc., publications, "Torvane Brochure for CL 600 TORVANE" and "Supplementary Instructions for Torvane CL 600 and Accessories CL 602 and 604". When performing the torvane shear test on soft and very soft clays, the accessory adapter vane CL-602 shall be mounted on the torvane. Other brands of pocket vane shear testers, with applicable accessories and instructions, may be used by the Contractor to perform torvane shear tests upon approval by the Contracting officer. s. Miniature Vane Shear Test in accordance with ASTM 4648. In cases where the test is requested on a very soft or disturbed sample that would require remolding, the contractor shall document the remolding process employed and note this in the final report. t. Soil Salinity. In accordance with U.S. Department of Agriculture publication, Handbook No. 60, "Diagnosis and Improvement of Saline and Alkali Soils," February 1954 (Deleted by AMD 0002) u. Percent Organic Content Test - AASHTO T 194 - (or approved alternate procedure).
