Description
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), NCIRD/Influenza Division/Epidemiology & Prevention Branch seeks to continue to enroll laboratory-confirmed influenza cases various hospitals during the upcoming 2011-12 influenza season in order to meet the minimum case number required by the original scope of work to evaluate the effectiveness of neuraminidase inhibitors among adults who are hospitalized with influenza. Our current contract with RTI International (RTI) was awarded in September, 2008 to initiate a multi-hospital observational study to compare outcomes of influenza-positive patients depending on whether or not they received neuraminidase inhibitors treatment and the timing of this treatment. Due to unavoidable delays in initiating the studies at multiple hospitals, e.g., delays in obtaining Institutional Review Board (IRB) approvals, the study was not able to fully enroll all involved hospitals during the 2010-11 influenza season. However, we believe that the IRB approvals can now be obtained in time for the start of the 2011-2012 flu season. Therefore, this contract action will extend the period of performance for one additional year. Based on the above, we believe that no other source, but RTI International in Research Triangle Park, NC 27709-2194can realistically meet our needs. The estimated period of performance for this work is 12 months from date of award.
