Description
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), has a need for contractor assistance in conducting research to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of using service dogs to help Veterans with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or other psychiatric disorders return to work. The contractor shall be responsible for three specific services: 1. The contractor will develop a survey for the purpose of identifying specific psychological, physiological, and functional barriers that prevent Veterans with PTSD and other psychiatric disorders from returning to work. 2. The contractor will conduct a scholarly review and evaluation of the scientific and professional literature to identify specific service-dog training requirements, specific tasks, and specific dog or breed characteristics that may be most effective in addressing the psychological, physiological, and functional barriers to employment. 3. The Contractor will work collaboratively with NIOSH researchers and conduct at least six laboratory-based clinical case studies to assess/demonstrate the efficacy of service dogs in ameliorating specific psychological, physiological, and functional symptoms associated with the employment barriers. These studies will be conducted at the NIOSH research facility in Morgantown, WV, which includes state-of-the-art laboratories and equipment to simulate various work tasks and work settings under controlled conditions. This requirement is being solicited on a full and open competition -unrestricted basis. The CDC expects to award a single fixed price contract, and the period of performance is expected to be three years from date of award.
