Description
Solicitation NOAA's Office of Coast Survey (OCS) requires an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) capable of collecting swath bathymetric data in conformance with NOAA standards for nautical charting data. The Coast Survey AUV project has successfully demonstrated the use of an AUV equipped with side scan sonar to conduct operational surveys to detect submerged obstructions and hazards to navigation. Coast Survey now requires a Bathymetric Mapping AUV to evaluate the operational effectiveness and data quality to determine if depth soundings collected by an AUV can meet nautical charting standards and NOAA survey requirements. The Bathymetric Mapping AUV will be initially operated as a test and evaluation system aboard NOAA survey vessels, and, once standard operating procedures are established and the data validated to conform to standards it will be used aboard NOAA vessels for operational bathymetric mapping surveys in support of nautical charting. In both cases the AUV will be used in a similar fashion to the manned shipboard launches, which are deployed from the survey ship for 8-10 hours per day to perform bathymetric surveys within a short transit of the ship. The survey launches are then recovered nightly and the acquired data is transferred to shipboard computers for processing.
