Description
NASA announces the Common Instrument Interface (CII) Project Workshop 1, scheduledfor April 21, 2011, in Greenbelt, MD.The workshop is sponsored by the Earth System Science Pathfinder (ESSP) Program, a spaceflight program in the Earth Science Division of NASAs Science Mission Directorate (SMD). The ESSP Program includes a series of relatively low-to-moderate cost, competitivelyselected, Principal Investigator-led mission and instrument investigations that arebuilt, tested, and launched in a short time interval in order to accommodate new andemergent scientific priorities. The 2007 Decadal Survey for Earth Science identified the Earth Venture (EV) class ofspace investigations which could include stand-alone missions that use simple, smallinstruments, spacecraft, and launch vehicles; more complex instruments of opportunityflown on partner spacecraft and launch vehicles; or complex sets of instruments flown onsuitable sub-orbital platforms to address focused sets of scientific questions. EarthVenture investigations focus on establishing new research avenues or on demonstrating keyapplication-oriented measurements. Earth Ventures key to success is maintaining asteady stream of opportunities for community participation in the development ofinnovative ideas, which requires that strict schedule and cost guidelines be enforced forthe program participants. One of the categories of Earth venture investigations, EV Instrument investigations(EV-I), comprise instruments of opportunity flown on partner spacecraft and launchvehicles. The first announcement of opportunity for EV-I investigations is planned forlater in 2011.The Common Instrument Interface (CII) Project will define a set of standard interfacesfor EV-I and other Mission of Opportunity instruments that can be flown on a variety ofplatforms (commercial, military, scientific) that have excess volume, mass, and power toaccommodate the instrument. This one-day workshop provides an open forum for spacecraft developers, Earth scienceresearchers, instrument developers, and the CII Team to discuss interface capabilitiesand instrument needs. This workshop will shape the CII guidelines that define theinstrument interfaces.Specific objectives of the workshop are:Providing an overview of the CII project and it anticipated products;Discussing the trade space of various parameters (mass, power, data etc.)applicable to common Earth Venture and other Earth science instruments and obtaining thefeedback from science and technology leaders;Reviewing the data and power specifications developed by the CII Working Group;Initiating a discussion of the mechanical, thermal, and environmentalspecifications; andEstablishing the process of conducting regular communications and potentialfuture workshops. Final plans for the workshop, including the workshop date, location, and participantcapacity, will be posted on the ESSP Homepage at http://essp.larc.nasa.gov/.Requests for further information and questions may be addressed to Mitra Dutta, EarthScience Division, Science Mission Directorate, NASA headquarters, 300 E Street SW,Washington, DC 20546; Phone: 202-358-4579; E-mail: sanghamitra.b.dutta@nasa.gov
