Description
1.0 Summary United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) Plant Protection and Quarantine (PPQ) is conducting field bio assay and operational tests on three component lures to be used as a synthetic food attractants for the female fruit fly. The dispensers shall be a 3-component type containing ammonium acetate, trimethylamine, and putrescine. The dispensers are utilized in various Fruit Fly Trapping programs. Dispensers should be constructed in a fashion that is conducive to outside conditions. The dispensers should not leak liquids, deteriorate in the sunlight, or dissolve in wet or damp conditions. The product must be easily opened by hand. Dispensers shall be compatible to use with the Better World Manufacturing Inc. Multi-Lure trap and shall be able to fit snugly into the lure well on top of the trap or hang from the central clip at the top of the trap. Other than the above information there is no required design (presentation) for the lure. 2.0 Required submittals Companies interested in submitting their lures for testing must sent 200 samples at NO COST to the Government to the following locations: 2.1 Field Bio Assay One hundred (100) samples shall be delivered to the Fruit Fly Genetics and Management Laboratory at Waimanalo, HI for an eight (8) week field bioassay test. The test will be run with the Mediterranean fruit fly (Ceratitits capitata). USDA APHIS PPQ CPHST Attn: Todd Shelly 41-650 Ahiki St. Waimanalo (Oahu), Hawaii 96795 Phone: (808) 259-8822 2.1.2 Evaluation of Bio Assay The lures effectiveness in attracting flies will be evaluated at: 1 day, 6 weeks, and 8 weeks against a Mcphail Trap freshly baited with Torula yeast pellets. Any lure that does not meet the minimum standard below would not be considered acceptable for program needs. Less than 50% capture after 24 hours - unacceptable Greater than or equal to 50% capture after 6 weeks - satisfactory Less than 50% capture after 6 weeks -- unacceptable Greater than or equal to 50% capture after 8 week -- Excellent 2.2 Operational Test (Type and Versatility) of Synthetic Food Three Component Lures (Dispensers): One hundred (100) samples shall be delivered to the Florida Fruit Fly Detection Program for operational field testing: USDA APHIS PPQ Attn: Ed Cusano 915 10th Street East Palmetto, FL 34221 Phone: (941) 722-7307 The samples will be placed in traps in the field to see how the lure products withstand Florida's weather conditions. The process will be run simultaneously with the Bioassay test. 2.2.1 Evaluation of Operational Test The handling procedures are important to prevent the loss of lure and to eliminate lure contamination of the trap. The product must be easily opened by hand. Dispensers shall be compatible with use with the Better World Manufacturing Inc Multi-Lure trap and shall be able to fit snugly into the lure well on top of the trap or hang from the central clip at the top of the trap. Problems observed in previous operational field tests include lure precuts melting, difficulty removing the lure from the trap bait well, and lures falling from the central clip. 3.0 Completion of Testing At the end of the testing a report will be given to all companies who submitted samples detailing the results for their product. 3.1 Desired outcome The outcomes of this testing may result in a standardized lure design for three component fruit fly attractant. 4.0 Results The NFFTC (National Fruit Fly Trapping Committee) evaluated the testing results of the three component fruit fly lures submitted in response to solicitation AG-6395-D-10-0003. Based on trap captures the Sutera 3 individual paks, Sutera 3-in-1 unipak, Scentry 3C cone, and Ag Bio 3C packet are all acceptable for program use. Based on operational testing and the ease of use the NFFTC is recommending the use of a cone presentation for use as the standard lures for Anastrepha spp. and medfly, respectively, in detection programs. However this recommendation does not preclude the use of packet lures as an acceptable alternative.
