Description
Sources Sought We propose to study Ultrafast Electron Diffraction (UED) as a suitable diagnostic for shock physics applications. This collaboration is to jointly study new methods in relativistic megavolt electron diffraction and examine feasibility of characterizing phase transitions with this technique. The proposed work scope encompasses a joint laboratory effort with equipment and personnel. S-band linear accelerator requirement, photoinjector shall be capable of producing 108 electrons packed in bunches of ~ 100 fs length with 3.5 MeV energy and ultra low emittance. This accelerator has proven to be uniquely suited for shock experiments to study phase transitions on picosecond time scales. The objective of this is to examine reflection mode. The reflection mode provides a useful geometry to investigate phase transitions of metal foils by laser induced shock waves. We propose a four phase approach for the experiments. In phase I and II our focus will be to prove the concept of UED in the reflection mode. In phase III, we will study static phase transitions of selected metals using a cooling/heating multicenter sample handling system. Our final goal of this research in phase IV is to study phase transitions with the traditional pump (laser induced shock) and probe (UED) scheme. Provide point of contact, capability statement and resumes of your key personnel to include unique qualifications and experience for this work.
