Description
REQUEST FOR INFORMATION Agent Based Game Human Behavior AI Architecture Technology Survey Purpose for the Request for Information (RFI): This is not a solicitation for contract. The purpose of this request for information (RFI) is to survey Industry, Academia and Other Government Agencies (OGA) in order to collect information and data that would establish novel approaches to intelligent behaviors in virtual, constructive and gaming simulation technologies. These approaches will be goal-based, multi-agent, or similar non-deterministic artificial intelligence architectures to enable more diverse, dynamic and realistic human behaviors in simulation. The resultant architectures should be demonstrated in a virtual environment. Companies, universities and agencies interested in pursuing future research and development opportunities with the U.S. Army are invited to respond to this RFI. Background: The US Army and US Marine Corps have several virtual, constructive and gaming simulation training systems. These systems are used to train a wide variety of skills in both services from individuals basic military skills, such as first aid and language acumen, to collective staffs command and control execution. The fiscal, personnel and materiel costs of the preferred, live training are constantly increasing causing the services to continue to leverage existing simulation capabilities and develop new ones to complement and supplement that live training. For most training applications, the current level of artificial intelligence is sufficient to set the appropriate conditions to meet training standards. For many others, such as those being designed to further develop small unit leaders, decision-making abilities, commodity artificial intelligence capabilities are not dynamic or complex enough to adequately set those training conditions. Due to the requirements to present complex situations and to allow, and even encourage, unpredicted trainee courses of actions, a very dynamic and interactive environment is required. To date, this flexibility and interaction has been provided by live role-players and operators, resulting in an exorbitantly high trainer-to-trainee ratio. A novel artificial intelligence architecture may be able to significantly reduce the number of facilitators required to effectively train many small-unit skills when incorporated in constructive and virtual simulation training systems. Specific Research Areas: Commercial game developers generally use a well-orchestrated fusion of scripting, algorithm-based artificial intelligence and plot and level design to achieve the desired look and feel playability of their games. All in all, this is a fairly rigid framework. To engender an adequately dynamic and interactive simulation environment in which to set training conditions, a different architecture is required. Central to this architecture is an improved artificial intelligence. Rather than relying solely on the current system of triggered scripts, a parametric goal-based artificial intelligence architecture could be developed which would be used to describe a multitude of behaviors from vehicles to human, whether friendly, hostile and neutral. Goal-based multi-agent systems are not necessarily new, but they have not been widely applied to constructive and virtual simulations. A dynamic artificial intelligence applied to existing and developing game-based simulations could expand the capabilities of simulations for training while reducing the manpower required to effectively employing it. Industry, Academia and OGA Response Guidelines: The following are suggested guidelines for the type of information that would be most useful to this RFI: 1.Provide information that describes your company or organizations background, capabilities, and areas of expertise. 2.Describe your company or organizations recent research, developments, existing prototypes and systems fielded to the military or sold in the commercial market as it relates to this RFI. Provide brochures, spec sheets, pictures and video clips of the system in use. 3.Reference and/or provide recently published papers that address aspects of Agent Based Game Human Behavior AI architecture and integration that is applicable to the effort. 4.All information submitted is covered under 18USC 1905 and will not be shared outside the Government. For security reasons, please DO NOT submit material on memory devices that interface to USB ports, e.g. thumb drives, etc. Submit information on compact disks (CD) and/or Digital Video Disks (DVD). This is not a solicitation for a contract. Development and publication of a technology roadmap does not constitute Army / RDECOM/STTC direction to start any contractual efforts. However, industry, academia and other government agencies are encouraged to participate in this survey and to provide any type and amount of information deemed appropriate. The Government representative will provide feedback to all submissions.
