Description
U. S. Patent No. 6,570,792 'Antiguided Fiber Ribbon Laser', issued 5/27/03. IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, Vol. 15, No. 5, May 2003 TECHNOLOGY/BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY A Multiple-Core Ribbon Fiber Laser Opportunity : Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), operated by the Lawrence Livermore National Security (LLNS), LLC under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), is offering the opportunity to license and commercialize the technology to make a Multiple-Core Ribbon Fiber Laser. Background : Fiber laser technology is progressing rapidly. Fiber lasers are advantageous both because of lower cost and lower maintenance (compared to competing technologies). With the improved technology, industry is producing increasingly powerful fiber lasers. Commercial fiber lasers are now available in the 10 kW range. However, theoretical computer modeling at LLNL indicates that single fiber technology will not be able to exceed 30 kW (because of non-linear and thermal problems). This has lead LLNL researchers to invent a new technology for a Multiple-Core Ribbon Fiber Laser. Description : The Multiple-Core Ribbon Fiber Laser consists of an array of fiber cores arranged in a single line. Some of the cores are doped with a lasing impurity, while other cores are doped with index-increasing impurities. The doping of these adjacent cores is designed to promote antiguiding and leaky modes which provide higher laser gain and more robust single supermode operation. Another aspect of the invention is that the ribbon laser is pumped from the side with a simple optical arrangement which doesn't require intensification of the pump laser diode output beam. This laser can be used as an oscillator or amplifier, and is intended to provide for high power operation, many times higher than possible with single core fibers. LLNL researchers have published a paper on this technology, "Phase-Locked Antiguided Multiple-Core Ribbon Fiber ", IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, Vol. 15, No. 5, May 2003. Advantages : The Multiple-Core Ribbon Fiber Laser is advantageous over a single fiber laser because it can attain higher powers (projected to reach 70 kW), while maintaining good beam quality. Potential Applications : This technology is appropriate for any application which currently uses a laser with a single fiber. However, it is probably most advantageous for higher power applications. Development Status: LLNL has patent protection for this technology under U.S. Patent No. 6,570,702, "Antiguided Fiber Ribbon Laser" issued 5/27/03. LLNL's Multiple-Core Ribbon Fiber Laser has been prototyped with positive results. Research is currently funded and progressing. LLNL is seeking industry partners with a demonstrated ability to bring such inventions to the market. Moving critical technology beyond the Laboratory to the commercial world helps our licensees gain a competitive edge in the marketplace. All licensing activities are conducted under policies relating to the strict nondisclosure of company proprietary information. Please visit the IPO website at https://ipo.llnl.gov/?q=resources-industry-working_with_us for more information on working with LLNL and the industrial partnering and technology transfer process. Note: THIS IS NOT A PROCUREMENT. Companies interested in commercializing LLNL's Multiple-Core Ribbon Fiber should provide a written statement of interest, which includes the following: 1. Company Name and address. 2. The name, address, and telephone number of a point of contact. •3. A description of corporate expertise and facilities relevant to commercializing this technology. Written responses should be directed to: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Industrial Partnerships Office P.O. Box 808, L-795 Livermore, CA 94551-0808 Attention: FBO 229-10 Please provide your written statement within thirty (30) days from the date this announcement is published to ensure consideration of your interest in LLNL's Multiple-Core Ribbon Fiber Laser.
