- Award of 8a negotiated construction contract. The Lower Cibola Bridge is located approximately 25 miles south of Blythe California, and approximately 100 miles north of Yuma, AZ. The bridge spans across the Colorado River at River Mile 93.6 and is approximately 557 feet in length. The bridge is wholly located in Arizona and within the Cibola National Wildlife Refuge. The project is for a deck replacement of the existing Lower Cibola Bridge. Minor work included with the deck replacement are: replacement of the existing curb and railing across the bridge, paving approximately 100 feet of the approaches to the bridge, guardrail installation at the bridge approaches, removal of road closure gates, replacement of navigation lighting, installation of minor conduit, and jacketing the timber piles of the bridge. There will be no substructure work other than the pile jacketing. The deck replacement will require the removal of the concrete deck, the steel railing, and existing minor conduit. The removal of the deck will be tightly controlled; no explosives will be allowed or any heavy equipment to remove the slabs. Deck removal will be by concrete saws and pneumatic or electric hammers of limited weights. No debris will be allowed into the river. The Colorado River is a navigable waterway, and close coordination with the US Coast Guard will be required during construction. It is anticipated approximately 400 cuyds of concrete will be required for this project, approximately 100 tons of asphalt, approximately 1200 feet of steel bridge railing, approximately 400 feet of guardrail, approximately 200 feet of pile jacketing, and over 1100 feet of conduit. There is minor earthwork for installation of guardrail, approach road tie-ins, and general road reconditioning. Minor turf establishment will be required for all disturbances as a result of the construction. The bridge will be closed during construction, however minor traffic control will be required. Pile jacketing will require an in depth underwater inspection of the piles and documented for the pile encapsulation. Underwater inspectors will be certified by the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) and will furnish all equipment, labor, licenses, permits, and insurance necessary to perform and complete the work. Only a small percentage of pile encapsulation is anticipated, however and option will be included for all pile encapsulation should funding be available.
