- Description
- The National Science Foundation's Office of Polar Programs has several remote science support structures built on moving ice sheets. Accumulation of drifting snow around structures located on the surface has led to the current practice of "elevated" buildings that are integrated with a foundation frame, permitting periodic raising of the facility. Periodic raising of elevated buildings limits snow drifting and reduces labor, equipment, and emissions to remove drifted snow, thereby maximizing the design life of the facilities. In order to inform future plans for building and maintaining facilities in polar regions, NSF has asked the U.S. Army's Cold Regions Research & Engineering Lab (CRREL) to host a workshop on jacking technology in Arlington, VA on September 15-16, 2010. Participants must be affiliated with existing systems, or proposed designs with good concept definition. If you feel you have something to contribute and wish to be considered for inclusion in the workshop, please contact: Dr. Jennifer Mercer, Ph.D. Program Manager, EPOLAR Program Cold Regions Research & Engineering Laboratory 72 Lyme Road, Hanover, NH 03755 Phone: 603-646-4420 E-mail: Jennifer.L.Mercer@usace.army.mil CRREL will write (with contributions from others) a public report on the workshop, describing the systems reviewed and discussions related to the various concepts. There is no intent to make decisions or recommendations regarding the efficacy of the designs presented or discussed. The workshop is intended to be a review of current practices that could be of benefit to all entities operating remote facilities in polar regions.
