- The USDA, Animal Plant Health Inspection Services, Pink Bollworm Rearing Facility in Phoenix, Arizona intends to negotiate on a sole source basis, under authority of FAR 13.106-1(b)(1), with Micro Motion of Boulder Colorado, for the acquisition of vitamin and acetic acid flow meters needed to feed directly into a 34 mm twin-screw extruder, used to make diet for pink bollworm (PBW) and other insects. This extruder is the backup for a larger, 80mm extruder that supplies diet for 20+ million moths/day, April through October. Production of moths is critical to the PBW Eradication Program in Phoenix, AZ. The meters must accurately deliver small amounts of vitamins, acetic acid and other ingredients directly to the twin-screw extruder. Pink Bollworm Rearing Facility (PBWRF) and Center for Plant Health Science and Technology (CPHST) staff must be able to precisely adjust delivered amounts of these ingredients, as needed by the target insect. This equipment will be used to prepare artificial diet for PBW, for the international Pink Bollworm Eradication Program (now in progress). The equipment will also be used to make diet for Light Brown Apple Moth and to conduct research on diets for these and other insects.
