Description
The USDA, ARS, Western Regional Research Center, Albany, California has a requirement for a hybrid high resolution mass spectrometer (MS). This hybrid MS must consist of two functioning mass spectrometers; the first builds on linear ion trap technology, the second on an Orbitrap analyzer. The mass spectrometer must be able to perform parallel detection; within one minute of analysis time it must be capable of acquiring at least 50 full scans at high resolution (R=60,000 @m/z 400) detected with the Orbitrap detector AND in parallel 200 data dependant unit resolution MS/MS scan with the ion trap detector. The mass spectrometer must operate in the following mass ranges: 50 to 2,000 Da (Ion Trap and Orbitrap detection) 200 to 4,000 Da (Ion Trap and Orbitrap detection) 15 to 200 Da (Ion Trap detection). MS1 Quadrupole Ion Trap Mass Spectrometer Mass range • The mass spectrometer must operate in the following mass ranges: o m/z 100-4000 o m/z 50 - 2000 o m/z 15 - 200 Scan power • The mass spectrometer must be able to perform MS(exp n) experiments, for n = 1 through n = 10 MS/MS sensitivity (Specifications to be run at time of installation) • Must include heated electrospray ionization (HESI II) Must include atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) source MS(exp n) sensitivity • Heated Electrospray Ionization (HESI II) Transfer Ion Optics • Bent RF only square quadrupole to remove the line of sight from the source to the mass analyzer • The mass spectrometer must include both an RF only square quadrupole ion optic and an RF only octapole ion optic • The transfer ion optics must be designed for high stability and ion transmission efficiency Inter-Octapole Lens • The mass spectrometer must include an inter-pole lens orifice optimized for ion transmission from the square quadrupole to the octapole Quadrupole Ion Trap Mass Spectrometer • The analyzer must consist of a dual cell segmented linear ion trap • The analyzer must be constructed using hyperbolic surfaces • The analyzer must have parallel exit slits for radial ion ejection • The analyzer must have slots in X and Y rods to balance the RF fields • The analyzer dimensions must be optimized for ultimate performance • The mass spectrometer must have a simple rugged construction for ease of maintenance • The mass spectrometer must have a regulated helium flow for stable operation • The mass spectrometer must have automatic system calibration and optimization Detection System • The system must have two (2) detectors • The ions must be ejected radially from the ion trap • The detection system must have a patented, post-acceleration conversion dynode with ±15kV applied voltage • The detection system must have an off-axis continuous dynode electron multiplier with extended dynamic range, capable of detecting both positive and negative ions • The detection system must have digital electronic noise discrimination • The instrument must be capable of switching polarities within 100ms Data System • Minimum configuration must include o Intel® 3.2GHz Pentium® IV processor with 2 Gb memory, 160Gb hard drive, 3.5" 1.44Mb diskette drive, 16X DVD+RW/+R, Dell USB keyboard, Dell USB Optical mouse o 19" LCD flat panel color monitor o Integrated Intel Video Card o Integrated Ultra ATA100 controller card o PCI 10/100 Twisted Pair Ethernet network card o Operating system: Windows XP Professional o Microsoft® Office XP standard Scan Functions •Must acquire and display Full Scan MS/MS spectra to produce Full Scan product ion spectra at sensitivities higher than any quadrupole mass spectrometer at a speed of greater than 33,000 Da/s with unit resolution • Must acquire and display Selected Reaction Monitoring (SRM) data for a defined fragment transition • Must be capable of MS(exp n) multi-stage MS experiments to provide greater structural information • Must have an Enhanced Scan Mode capable of determining 3+ and 4+ charge state ions at 10,000 Da/s • Must have ZoomScanTM capability for high-resolution scan to resolve isotopic envelopes, of ions of at least 5+ charge state from 50-2000 Da at a scan speed of 2200 Da/sec • Must have TurboScanTM capability for ultra-fast scan to improve signal-to-noise and sampling rate of 125,0000 Da/s Advanced Functions • Must have Automatic Gain ControlTM (AGC) to automatically control ion injection time for optimized ion current across the entire chromatographic peak • When coupled with ETD the instrument must have Data dependent decision tree logic to determine the optimal fragmentation •Must have Dynamic ExclusionTM capability to temporarily exclude an ion while allowing acquisition of MS/MS or MS(exp n) spectra;
