Description
The A Bureau's Ralph Bunche Library and the Bureau of International Information Programs (IIP) Information Resources Office (IR) are conducting this acquisition for the discovery software Primo, with its Primo Central component, for a combined virtual library Web site. The A Bureau's Ralph Bunche Library and IIP Bureau's Information Resources Office are creating a virtual library. This library will exist on a remotely hosted Web site with a searchable collection available through the Bunche Library's Voyager integrated library system (ILS). The collection will consist of electronic books (ebooks), journal articles from commercial databases, electronic materials that are selected and licensed, and open-access documents available on America.gov, other government Web sites and open access scholarly repositories. This virtual library is for library patrons of the Department of State, Embassy-based Information Resource Centers, American Corners, and Bi-national Centers worldwide. In addition to these electronic resources, the virtual library will incorporate library catalogs of individual libraries, facilitating access to print resources as well as electronic resources. In order to provide a useful search experience and help facilitate discovery of these resources, it is necessary to acquire a remotely-hosted "discovery tool" that pulls information from all the different types of resources into a single search interface. This discovery tool is Primo, integrated with Primo Total CareCentral. Ex Libris, the company that designed Primo, is also the company that designed and developed Voyager, the software currently used for the Ralph Bunche Library's Integrated Library System (ILS). Both Primo and Voyager are the exclusive intellectual property of and are represented, licensed, installed and supported solely by Ex Libris. The unique compatibility between these products creates the seamless interoperatability necessary to meet the government's requirements. Only Ex Libris ia able to fufill this requirement because the software must interface with Voyager which is Ex Libris's exclusive intellectual property right. Only Primo is compatible with Voyager.
