Description
Research Plan for Restoration of Native Plant Communities at Ouray NWR Background/Overview Ouray National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) is a 12,000 acre Refuge located in NE Utah in Uintah County. The Refuge is comprised of riparian woodlands, floodplain wetland bottoms, upland grasslands and shrubs with 16 miles of the Green River within the Refuge boundary. The five floodplain bottoms primarily receive water during high flows of the Green River. Much of the floodplain bottoms and grasslands had been farmed prior to the establishment of the Refuge in 1960. Over the past several years, Ouray National Wildlife Refuge has attempted to restore uplands that have been degraded by disturbance and/or dominant invasive weeds. A variety of seeding techniques and irrigation has been used. However, success in restoration has been very poor. Ouray NWR has a great need to have the knowledge and ability to successfully restore uplands and riparian areas. There has been considerable disturbance with past and present farming, disturbance with developments, and ongoing invasive weed issues. In the near future, it is expected that a couple thousand acres of saltcedar will be drastically reduced due to successful biological control. Restoration in some of those areas will be crucial to reduce invasion by other weeds such as Russian olive. Past restoration attempts have further disturbed the soil increasing invasive weed populations. The climate at Ouray NWR is semi-arid with only 7 inches of rain annually and native desert grasses can be very slow to develop. Attempts at irrigation have significantly increased the kochia stand which in turn has crowded out native plant germination and growth. An experimental plan has been established to test several methods of seeding techniques with and without irrigation, the use of cover and nurse crops, control of invasive weeds during restoration seeding and growth, and the success of several native grass species. Ouray NWR is seeking a consultant to implement the experimental design as planned, assist with monitoring of invasive weed controls and native species response, synthesize raw data for statistical analysis, and complete interim and final reports.
