Description
RECOVERY ACTION. FOR INFORMATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY. DUNS 007113228. The modification addresses the following work: These funds will be used for: • Supplement entitled "Mesh Generation for Modeling and Simulation of Carbon Sequestration Processes" to existing Advanced Scientific Computing Research-Computational Partnerships (SciDAC) project "Interoperable Technologies for Advanced Petascale Simulations" to support collaborative research with Basic Energy Sciences (BES)-supported Energy Frontier Research Centers (EFRCs) to develop a high-performance computing capability relevant to the goals of the EFRC. ($600,000) • Supplement entitled "Algebraic Multigrid Methods for Modeling and Simulation of Carbon Sequestration Processes on Multicore/GPU Architectures" to existing SciDAC project "Toward Optimal Petascale Simulations (TOPS)" to support collaborative research with BES-supported EFRCs to develop a high-performance computing capability relevant to the goals of the EFRC. ($1,113,880) The action is other than fixed price because work assigned to the Sandia Corporation through the issuance of Work Authorizations (WAs) is pursuant to the terms and conditions of their prime management and operating contract awarded under as a cost reimbursement type contract due to the uncertainties in contract performance. Cost cannot be estimated with sufficient accuracy to use any type of fixed price contract as the exact nature and duration of the work is uncertain. The use of a separate fixed price award to Sandia Corporation for the WA is inappropriate because this is issued under an existing cost reimbursable contract. Sandia was selected by the Department of Energy (DOE) to participate in this American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) work due to the expertise at Sandia National Laboratories in the subject matter. The work falls within the prime contract's Statement of Work, paragraph 3.5, entitled "Computing, Modeling, and Simulation" that states: "The Contractor shall maintain state of the art technologies and capabilities to support high-performance computing, modeling, simulation; communications; cyber-security, and information management. The Contractor shall participate in the Accelerated Strategic Computing Initiative, the Advanced Computational Technology Initiative, the Strategic Simulator Initiative, and other associated research on complex and large-scale national problems in computational science." NOTE: This action is awarded under prime contract modification no. 386 that recognizes Work Authorization no. KJ/AL08/0/ARRA- 1,-2 issued under M&O Contract number DE-AC04-94AL85000. This action is funded by Recovery Act dollars.
