Description
During the Pump #5 overhaul, the remaining four pumps must be kept operational. Before work can begin on Pump #5, stop gates must be installed and the intake chamber must be dewatered. Pump #5 required work includes separating the approximate 50-ton motor from the pump using the in-house crane, removing the damaged pump impeller from its shaft (requiring 400 tons of force), removing the shaft cover pipe, guide bearings, and miscellaneous other components. Said components shall be transported to a service center for cleaning, inspection, and complete evaluation. Damaged or worn parts shall be replaced or refurbished as appropriate. The 15,000 lb, 10 diameter. 4.5 high impeller is beyond repair and a new cast iron impeller must be fabricated and finish machined. Pump diffuser and discharge housing components, roughly 32 high and 10 in diameter, must be evaluated in-place for cracks, pitting and other damage. Cracked areas will be repaired using the metal stitching method and pitting by use of a metal repair product. All components shall be sandblasted prior to examination. Upon completion of repairs carbon metal components are to be coated with a coal-tar epoxy system. The motor and pump must be reassembled in a precisely aligned manner. The reassembled pump shall undergo dry and wet vibration and bearing temperature analysis and realigned at the contractors expense if the test results fall outside accepted criteria. During the control gates refurbishing, one gate must remain functional at all times. These gates provide cooling water to the Dominion power plant. One gate is currently in the down position and the operator is non-functional. It requires refurbishment. The other gate is operational but the operator requires refurbishment of the gear boxes and drive gears.
