Description
Construction of Log Debris Structures. The Olympic National Forest intends to acquire by contract floodplain and river restoration work from approximately River Mile 12 to 13 along the main stem of the South Fork Skokomish River, adjacent to the Oxbow Campground area. Access is from Forest Service Road Nos. 23 and 2300-220. Contractor shall construct approximately 30 strategically placed log debris structures along the edges of the main channel, on the flood plain, and at tributary outlets. Project includes reconstructing approximately 0.5 mile of an abandoned forest road to provide access for heavy equipment and maintenance vehicles from the Oxbow campground to the project site. General staging area during instream construction will be in the old Oxbow campground area, which would be closed during the project. Tracked excavators and bulldozers will be used to construct logjams and large wood complexes along stream channels, gravel bars, and floodplains. Each of the log jams will be strategically located to accomplish specific restoration objectives. Most of the logjams would be constructed along the edges of the current stream channel or on the floodplain. The amount of wood per structure will depend on the structure type and location and will range from 40 to about 180 pieces of wood per structure. All of the logjams will be designed and constructed to remain stable during large flood events. A large portion of each structure will be buried below the streambed.
