Description
SOW New Requirement. Additional Sources sought. Up to 2 positions available. The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS), located at SLAC, began operation last year as the world's first x-ray free-electron laser, producing ultra-fast pulses of coherent x-rays with unprecedented brightness. A suite of x-ray instruments for exploiting the unique LCLS scientific capabilities are being produced. This is a heterogeneous system comprised of VME and cPCI and ATCA single board computers running RTEMS and clusters of machines running Linux. Components to be controlled and readout are several different types of stepper motors (e.g. IMS smart motors), vacuum gauges with MKS controllers, Gamma ion-pump controllers, high-voltage via VME modules, low-voltage supplies, Automation Direct Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and several different types of CCD cameras. The components are connected either via terminal server serial port, Ethernet, or directly via plug-in cards in VME and cPCI crates or in PCI slots in linux servers. Control processes run on VME CPU modules running the RTEMS open-source real-time operation system, or cPCI and PCI servers running the Red-Hat linux operating system. For the controls the Experimental Physics and Industrial Controls System (EPICS) frame-work is used. User interface are GUI screens written in EDM or python/Qt. The contractor will work on the development, installation, debugging, commissioning, and maintenance of the above described controllers including hardware and software. The successful candidate will interact with scientists and engineers to get and keep the systems running and implement improvements. This presolicitation does not obligate SLAC to fill these positions nor binds SLAC to provide an RFP or solicit or award a contract.
