- The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Region 7 Alaska, intends to award a sole source, firm fixed price contract with one base year and four option years to Matson's Laboratroy. Matson's Laboratory will be required to perform cementum age analysis for Sea Otter & Walrus Teeth. Matson's Laboratory is the only laboratory capable of providing this service, as no other laboratory, identified in market research, can perform this service on marine mammal teeth such as sea otters & walruses. Furthermore, Matson's laboratory is the only known lab who cross sections and ages teeth. In addition, to reduce inter-observer differences & maintain scientific integrity of the data set, it is advisable to continue processing these services from Matson's laboratory. Work Description: Matson Laboratory will perform the following services:Using a microtome, section the root tip longitudinally, stain and mount to micrscope slide. Age walrus and sea otter tooth sections based on standardized cementum age analysis techniques. For a description of standardized method, see ( Garlich-Miller et al. 1993, Fay et al. Matson 19811986, and Working Group 1 1993). Each tooth should be read in 3 replicates with the median age returned as the final estimate.Deliverables:1. Provide tooth sections mounted on slides.2. Return unused tooth material.3. Provide an age estimate for each individual tooth by sample number.4. Provide a certainty code for each tooth indicating how closely the cementum characteristics match those of the standardized aging model for the species and tooth type.5. All data returned must be in a Microsoft Excell format. This notice is not a request for competitive proposals and the Government does not intend to accept proposals received. See Numbered Note 22.
