The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has awarded a contract to Grunley Construction Company, Inc. for Phase 4A Modernization of its South Building located at 1400 Independence Avenue in Washington, DC. Funds for this construction project are provided from the $24 million American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act) USDA received earlier this year. The modernization project will help resolve many life safety issues and environmental hazards, such as bringing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems up to code, increasing energy efficiency, conforming to barrier free accessibility requirements, and strengthening the overall safety and security of building occupants. The renovation project is registered under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Commercial Interiors (CI) track. The project will achieve no less than the basic certification level, with Silver as the target. Attaining LEED certification complies with the intent of Executive Order 13423 and the Guiding Principles for Federal Leadership in High Performance and Sustainable Buildings. Construction materials specified will utilize the highest bio-based content practical. Specifically the renovation of Wing 5 of the South Building will include: • hazardous material abatement • increase energy efficiency • improve accessibility in rest rooms • Upgrade electrical and mechanical building systems • Installation of automatic sprinkler system • Preservation of historic building features • Provide more efficient office space This contract was awarded after competition by sealed bidding procedures; eight (8) bids were received and the award was made to the lowest responsible/responsive bidder.
