Description
TECHNOLOGY/BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY Pulsed Ponderomotive Phase Plate Opportunity : Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), operated by the Lawrence Livermore National Security (LLNS), LLC under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), is offering the opportunity to license the pulsed ponderomotive phase plate technology. Background : Short-pulse electron probe instruments have been adopted at a greater rate and in various forms, such as ultrafast electron diffractometers (UED), dynamic transmission electron microscopes (DTEM), and ultrafast transmission electron microscopes (UFTEM). These instruments' capabilities have not been fully optimized. High-resolution biological imaging using a transmission electron microscope (TEM) relies on phase contrast (i.e. the image formation depends on the phase shift of electron waves as they pass through the sample). Typically phase contrast relies on lens imperfections (or aberrations) and requires that images be taken out of focus. This method has drawbacks in the form of information at low spatial frequencies and contrast reversals as well as oversensitivity to incoherence at high spatial frequencies. One way to solve this is with phase plates, which produce a 90º phase shift between low-angle and high-angle scattered electrons, but standard phase plates introduce problems such as incoherent scattering, total loss of intermediate spatial frequency information, and contamination of the physical phase plate. Description : LLNL has developed a method for producing highly tunable contrast transfer functions for high-resolution phase contrast imaging in a pulsed transmission electron microscope. The method uses a focused crossover from a pulsed laser as a phase plate, using the ponderomotive effect to introduce a scattering-angle-dependent phase shift in the electron wave. This will enable high-contrast, high-resolution phase contrast images with information that can be interpreted over a wide range of spatial frequencies without suffering degradation as seen in conventional phase plates. It provides significantly higher contrast and resolution for digital imaging of ultrafast material processes on the nanometer scale. The system is designed to augment short-pulsed TEM instruments. Advantages relative to standard phase contrast imaging : •· High contrast over a wide spatial frequency band with no contrast reversals •· Less sensitive to spatial incoherence in the incident electron beam Advantages relative to standard phase plates : •· No accumulation of contamination on the phase plate, which is made of photons, not atoms •· Reduced incoherent scattering •· Ability to adjust the size and phase shift profile of the phase plate through laser parameters Potential Applications : •· High-contrast, high-resolution static imaging of low-contrast samples, such as biological samples •· Enables additional operating modes for short-pulse TEM •· Augment existing cryo-TEM systems Development Status : •· Prototype being designed LLNL is seeking industry partners with a demonstrated ability to bring such inventions to the market. Moving critical technology beyond the Laboratory to the commercial world helps our licensees gain a competitive edge in the marketplace. All licensing activities are conducted under policies relating to the strict nondisclosure of company proprietary information. Please visit the IPO website at http://ipo.llnl.gov/workwithus/partneringprocess.php for more information on working with LLNL and the industrial partnering and technology transfer process. Note: THIS IS NOT PROCUREMENT. Companies interested in commercializing LLNL's Pulsed Ponderomotive Phase Plate technology should provide a written statement of interest, which includes the following: 1. Company Name and address. 2. The name, address, and telephone number of a point of contact. •3. A description of corporate expertise and facilities relevant to commercializing this technology. Written responses should be directed to: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Industrial Partnerships Office P.O.
