Description
TECHNOLOGY/BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY For TWO STAGE Engine TECHNOLOGY Opportunity : Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), operated by the Lawrence Livermore National Security (LLNS), LLC under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), is offering the opportunity to license LLNL's Two Stage Engine technology. Background : Traditional engine technology has matured. With the price of fuel increasing, there is an increased need for new engine technologies which can increase fuel efficiency and meet strict pollution standards. Description : LLNL has evaluated a new engine system which uses a two stage engine, which uses a piston engine as the first stage of combustion and a turbine engine for a second stage of combustion. This new engine provides increased fuel economy and also reduces polluting exhaust emissions by burning fuel in a two-stage combustion system. The first stage combusts fuel in a piston engine which produces exhaust gases. The first stage piston engine runs "rich" in fuel. The excess fuel left in the exhaust gas is burned up stoichiometrically in the turbine engine, which powers a compressor for supplying air at elevated pressure to the piston and turbine stages. Because the turbine operates at a lower temperature it suppresses the production of pollutants. This engine resembles a "turbo-charged" engine, except for the addition of a turbine combustion chamber which extracts more energy from the piston engine exhaust. Advantages : This should result in a very low pollution engine because of the dual combustion operating with different parameters. The engine should also produce more horsepower for a given piston engine displacement because the addition turbine combustion stage increases the piston engine intake pressure from one up to six atmospheres. Potential Applications : High efficiency engines for cars, motorcycles, private aircraft, and boats. Development Status: LLNL has an issued patent for this technology, US #7,040,094, and a pending Reissue application. However, the technology still requires some reduction to practice. LLNL is looking for a partner to demonstrate and commercialize the technology. LLNL is seeking industry partners with a demonstrated ability to bring such inventions to the market. Moving critical technology beyond the Laboratory to the commercial world helps our licensees gain a competitive edge in the marketplace. All licensing activities are conducted under policies relating to the strict nondisclosure of company proprietary information. Please visit the IPAC website at http://www.llnl.gov/IPandC/workwithus/partneringprocess.php for more information on working with LLNL and the industrial partnering and technology transfer process. Note: THIS IS NOT A PROCUREMENT. Companies interested in commercializing LLNL's Two Stage Engine technology should provide a written statement of interest, which includes the following: 1. Company Name and address. 2. The name, address, and telephone number of a point of contact. •3. A description of corporate expertise and facilities relevant to commercializing this technology. Written responses should be directed to: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Industrial Partnerships and Commercialization P.O. Box 808, L-795 Livermore, CA 94551-0808 Attention: FBO 214-09 Please provide your written statement within thirty (30) days from the date this announcement is published to ensure consideration of your interest in LLNL's Two Stage Engine technology.
