Description
The USDA, Agricultural Research Service (ARS), ERRC, Fats, Oils and Animal Coproducts Research Unit intends to negotiate solely with Mistras Physical Acoustics Corporation in Princeton Jct., NJ to furnish, deliver and install (FOB) Destination) an Acoustic Emission/Airborne Ultrasonic Material Evaluation System designed to test leather and animal hides. This system combines both Acoustic Emission (AE) and Low-frequency Ultrasonics (UT) for air coupled sensors in order to nondestructively test leather at the various leather making stages. The Material Evaluation System will include a chassis integrating both acoustic emission and ultrasonic testing, software for AE and UT as well as advanced characterization AE software, portable X/Y scanner with a 18”x20” envelope, arbitrary waveform generator on a PCI bus card, an analog to digital conversion PCI board with low frequency modification and other accessories seamlessly designed to test leather. The AE part of the equipment will allow us to test the mechanical properties, such as strength and softness. The UT part of the equipment will allow us to observe the surface and structure of the raw hide and leather in order to characterize the material for defects not observed by the human eye. The airborne ultrasonic system will also allow us to observe and detect defects in the hide or leather automatically, such as scratches, butcher marks and insect bites. The system will include: •1- Portable chassis with up to 24 channels including a 19” LCD monitor •1 -2 channel AE system on a PCI board, that includes very low noise with waveform and hit processing built on one full size, industry standard 32 bit PCI card. oInternal 18 bit 40 Msamples/sec Analog to Digital (A/D) conversion and processing for better resolution, including real time sample averaging to provide enhanced accuracy. oBuilt in real time feature extraction and direct memory access (DMA) on each channel for high speed transient data analysis at high rates directly to the hard disk oBuilt in waveform processing with independent DMA transfer of each channel o4 high pass and 6 low pass filter selections for each channel controlled by the software oUp to 2 parametrics on the PCI board with 16 bit A/D converter with rates up to 100 readings/second. The first parametric will provide a full instrumentation conditioning channel and the second will provide a straight +/- 10 volt input. oAE data streaming to allow continuous recoding of AE waveforms to the hard disk at up to 10 Msamples/sec on one channel and 5 Msamples/sec on 2 AE channels. •AE software for operation of 2 channels, that will be able to read older AE data files. •NOESIS software – Multi-document windows software for advanced data analysis with pattern recognition and neural networks software for acoustic emission applications. •2- Differential rolling dry contact sensors with a 1.19” wheel diameter, operating temperature from 0 to 85C, peak sensitivity of -70 V/(m/s), operating frequency range of 200-1000 kHz. •2 – Microdot to B”NC sensor cables to connect rolling sensors •1-Motorized XY portable scanner, 18x20” scan envelope with suction cup feet, 5 phase stepper X/Y drive powered by 115 volts. •1- Motor controller •1 – Through transmission adapter yoke for motorized X-Y scanner, to include right adapters, connectors for air coupled sensors, search tubes and adjustment brackets. •1- In line voltage amplifier with sensor modification and separate power connector to 30-1200 kHz and SMA connections on both sides. •4 – BNC to BNC cables •1- Arbitrary waveform generator on a PCI bus card with 14 bit, capable of 100 Msamples/sec, have a +/- 150 volt output, a 750kHz bandwidth, SMB to BNC cable, the manual and wave generation software. •1- 1210 A/D PCI board with 12 bit, 100 Msamples/sec analog to digital conversion rate with low frequency modification •2 – noncontact Ultrasonic Testing (UT) sensors, 500kHz with 19mm active area diameter •UT software capable of performing full A, B, and C scans •2 – preamplifiers capable of 20/40/60 dB gain with a wide dynamic range (<90dB), low noise (less than 2 microvolts), high input impedance and a large output signal of 20Vpp into 50 ohms. This system is unique to Physical Acoustics Corporation because it will provide both Acoustic Emission (passive listening to a material under stress) and Low Frequency Ultrasonics for air coupled sensors (active pulsing of sound into a material). High frequency ultrasonics cannot be used for this application due to the attenuative properties of leather and animal hides. Physical Acoustics can provide both of these technologies into one integrated system both in hardware and software. In addition Physical Acoustics can integrate, link, and synchronize these components in a PC based system or PCI board format. This system will be portable and able to be carried to tanneries for field tests. Mistras Acoustic Emission (PCI-2) systems can extract the data features, such as energy, absolute energy, duration, rise, counts, frequency and multiple other features in real time. The streaming waveform feature is also unique to Physical Acoustics proprietary software and the PCI-2 board in the system links and synchronizes the waveform generator and AE system to a PCI board. Physical Acoustics PCI-2 board based acoustic emission system and low-frequency ultrasonic system present data in A, B, and C scan formats for topographical analysis. The data will be analyzed by Physical Acoustics proprietary neural network program call NOESIS, in order to find classifiers or patterns in the data. NOESIS is a program that has been exclusively written by Mistras, Inc., the holding company for Physical Acoustics Corporation. A Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA), “Development of an in-line Nondestructive Acoustic Emission Tester for the Characterization of Leather,” was established with Physical Acoustics Corporation. Physical Acoustics was the original source of contact for continued development of this major system or highly specialized equipment to characterize leather and animal hides. Physical Acoustics was awarded Phase 1 of a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Grant titled, “Acoustic Emission for the Characterization of Leather.” Physical Acosutics proprietary software AEwin is backward compatible with all of our previous acoustic emission data and without this software we would not be able to reproduce or replay any data dating back 15 years. This new system will be a replacement to our current LOCAN AT system. Companies with the demonstrated capability of providing this equipment must submit a descriptive statement, including descriptive literature, specifically addressing the equipments components and availability. The statement and literature must be submitted to the Contracting Office Address within 5 days of publication of this notice. This is not a request for proposal. NO SOLICITATION IS AVAILABLE.
