The components of this system include the software package and forceps. This system provides realistic simulation of cataract and vitreoretinal surgical procedures and allows beginning ophthalmic surgeons to gain experience in a non-threatening environment with no risk to patients. The Eyesi opens up a new dimension in hands-on state-of-the-art ophthalmic surgery training. The Gold Software Package is an annual software update program designed to ensure the Eyesi system remains state of the art to support education. The hand activated forceps improve the training utility of the Eyesi simulator by better simulating the realities of cataract and retina surgery. Currently, the VA Boston HCS has two eyesi simulator platforms which are vital to clinical care as they are highly integrated into the surgical training program. These devices used in training ophthalmology residents are greatly enhanced through the addition of the new software and hardware. The Ophthalmology Service is unable to utilize the simulators without the updated software and thus needs the forceps to appropriately simulate real surgery. Without this much needed equipment, the residency program and patient safety may be comprised.
