Description
Expression of Interest for Superconducting Radiofrequency Cavities Brookhaven Science Associates, LLC (BSA) is seeking expressions of interest from manufacturers regarding the production of two 500 MHz superconducting (SC) niobium cavities with the option for an additional spare cavity, plus ancillary equipment, all of which will be located at Brookhaven National Laboratory ( BNL), Upton, NY 11973. BSA, under Contract DE-AC02-98CH10886 with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for the operation of BNL, is designing and constructing a new synchrotron radiation light source, hereinafter referred to as National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II), that will have SC radiofrequency (RF) cavities to accelerate the electron beam to 500 MHz. General Manufacturing/Testing/Installation Description The SC cavity has low RF loss and can induce very high voltage. In order to operate with large beam currents, the SC cavity must damp the higher-order modes (HOMs) that can make the beam unstable. To reduce risk, the cavity must be of a pre-existing design. The only two cavity designs being considered for this procurement are the KEK-B cavity modified for 500 MHz and the CESR-B cavity. The cavities built for NSLS-II must conform to the performance levels that these cavities have achieved in operation. The design notes and achieved operating parameters of existing cavities will be considered as part of the design specification for the purpose of this inquiry. Detailed specifications of the respective cavities will be written as part of the formal procurement process, but are broadly described below. • Manufacturing two 500 MHz niobium cavities with the option for another, spare cavity • Manufacturing or supplying all ancillary equipment such as: tuners, tuner drivers, cryostat, input coupler power window, HOM dampers, support frames, beam pipe components, and instruments and electronics • Testing performed by Vendor and BNL personnel using KEK or Cornell facilities: • Vertical test • Input coupler power test • HOM damper power test • Cooling test • Activities at BNL: • Acceptance test • Assembly of beam pipe and beam pipe components • Assembly and installation of input coupler • Horizontal test •Installation Standards The supplied equipment will comply with the following standards. • ASME pressure vessel code • NFPA-70 (NEC) Components and Services for SC Cavities • Niobium cavities (frequency of 500MHz) • Cryostats and tuner arms • Input couplers/window assemblies • HOM dampers • Assembly • Packing and shipping • Technical advisers' service • Vertical test • Coupler/window power test • HOM damper power test • Cooling test • Assembly in site • Cooling test • Installation If your firm is interested in this project and possesses the resources for a project of this scope, please provide a response to Francine Militscher, Sr. Contract Specialist, at Militscher@bnl.gov by 5:00PM Eastern Daylight Time on or before August 28, 2009.
