Description
The flood of 2008 deposited large quantities of driftwood on the face of the Saylorville Lake Barrier Dam. The Barrier Dam is located off of highway 415 adjacent to the Saylorville Marina and approximately 1.5 miles south of Polk City, IA. Contractor will be responsible for the removal and disposal of all logs on the dam over 6in in diameter (measured exceeding anywhere on the log length). Access to the driftwood is only available from the Neal Smith Bike Trail located at the foot of the dam. Care in removal is needed to insure no damage is done to the rip rap surface of the dam. Any damage or displacement of rip rap shall be replaced by the contractor at their expense. Once driftwood logs are removed from the face of the dam they are to be hauled to a designated dump site where they are to be chipped. Work will consist of walking up and down large rip-rap rock on face of dam. Trees will be pulled/lifted from the face of the dam to the bottom of the dam with minimal movement of rip rap. Chainsaw work may be required to cut larger pieces of driftwood for ease of handling and hauling. Any rip-rap that is moved in the process needs to be put back into its original position. Once the trees/logs have been removed from the face of the dam the contractor will be required to haul trees to Sandpiper Recreation Area (1.1 mile) for them to be chipped. The dump location is a flat, level, open terrain for ease of dumping and chipping. On the west side of the barrier dam between the bike trail and the dam is a small grove of trees which need to be removed. Trees need to flush cut to the ground. All trees in the area need to be taken out except for the Pin Oak. Pin Oak trees will be marked by the Government with orange paint. Contractor shall use extreme care not to damage the Pin Oak trees. Work for this contract is to be completed thirty (30) days after contract award. Work days are Monday through Friday between the hours of 7 am and 5 pm. No work will be permitted on weekends or holidays. Five working days will be allowed to remove the driftwood from the rip rap. Chipping of the driftwood will be completed within two weeks of driftwood removal from the dam. Inclement weather may inhibit safe work and if so, the Government will allow for additional work days.
