Description
Description of Work- This solicitation and any resultant contract is a stewardship project in accordance with Section 323 of Public Law 108-7 (16 U.S.C. 2104 Note, as revised February 28, 2003 to reflect sec. 323 of J.J. Res. 2 as enrolled), the Consolidated Appropriations Resolution, 2003, amending Public Law 105-277, sec. 347. This is a request for proposals Service acquisition that has been tailored to fit the Government’s method of trading goods for services. The purpose of the proposed Sourgrass Fuel Reduction and Vegetation Management Project is to reduce forest surface and ladder fuel profiles and to lower timber stand densities on about 1,401 acres of public land on the Calaveras Ranger District. About 37 acres of the project area are within the WUI zone for the community of Dorrington. These treatments are designed to reduce the size and severity of future wildfires, reduce the risk of insect/pathogen drought-related mortality and promote growth and vigor in residual trees, optimize visual quality, improve watershed conditions, and restore or enhance habitat for riparian and aquatic species. The project will remove approximately 10,494 ccf of merchantable timber and 1,307 ccf of biomass on about 1,102 acres. Stands will be thinned using various prescriptions for removing merchantable timber between 10” and 30”dbh (with the exception of hazard trees, right-of-way trees, etc. which may be greater than 30’dbh), biomass material between 4” and 10”dbh, and shredding, masticating or burning material that is between 1” and 4”dbh. In addition, about 238 acres would receive understory burning with no thinning prescription. Project Location: The project is located approximately 8 miles northeast of Arnold on National Forest System lands within the Calaveras Ranger District. Access is primarily off of State Highway 4. Much of the project area is surrounded by lands owned by Sierra Pacific Industries and other private ownership. Nearby residential subdivisions include Dorrington, Camp Connell, and Cottage Springs. The legal description for the Sourgrass Fuel Reduction and Vegetation Management Project is: T5N R15E Section 1, T5N R16E Sections 4-6, T6N R15E Section 24, T6N R16E Sections 19-21 & 29-33
