Description
Word version of specifications. Battelle, Pacific Northwest Division, Management & Operating Contractor of the U.S. Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), is requesting proposals from prospective offers to provide: Field Emission High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscope A new generation high resolution transmission electron microscope (TEM) with a configuration optimized (and customized) to enable microscopy and spectroscopy is being planned as a major new capability for the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL), a national US Department of Energy (DOE) User Facility located at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). This instrument will be designed to allow microscopy and spectroscopy measurements relevant to catalytic and geochemical studies of importance to energy and environmental applications. Because EMSL is a user facility, we are looking for ease of operation, friendly for user training and operation, high instrument durability and excellent instrument service. The system envisioned is a high resolution electron microscope that should be able to provide the following capabilities: (1) High resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM) imaging (2) high spatial resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) imaging (3) High energy resolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) (4) Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy system (5) Image acquisition and recording systems To answer important questions about the interfacial and defect control of catalytic reactions and the chemical nature of nanoparticles, the microscope shall be equipped with an electron beam with low energy spread and high resolution electron energy loss detector. This will allow detailed chemical information to be obtained with an energy resolution of about 0.3 eV to 0.8 eV or better in electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). To obtain important information about the role of interface and particle structure on chemical reactivity, the microscope will need to have a point to point resolution better than 1.9 Angstrom (0.19 nm) for TEM imaging and a resolution of better than 1.0 Angstrom (0.1 nm) for STEM bright and dark field imaging. To achieve the STEM resolution, the microscope will need to have an aberration corrector for the STEM probe forming lens (Cs-probe corrector). Gatan image filter (GIF) should be incorporated to energy filtered imaging technique and an energy dispersive x-ray detector system should be incorporated for chemical composition analysis. The request for proposal is posted at http://www.pnl.gov/contracts/solicitations/ titled RECOVERY ACT: Field Emission and Aberration Corrected Scanning/Transmission Electron Microscope. If you have questions or need additional information, they must also be submitted in writing to the points of contact.
