- RECOVERY. This notice is provided for informational purposes only. The project will be partially funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The proposed action is to award a $32,727,170 not-to-exceed contract for development of a proof-of-concept Hybrid Electric Drive (HED) system for a full-scale demonstration with an initial funding increment of $13,000,000. HED is aimed at improving the operating efficiency of the engineering plant on DDG 51 Class Ships and is intended to demonstrate the capability for significant fuel savings by incorporating advanced electric machine technology. This supports the national defense imperative to reduce dependence on foreign non-renewable energy resources. The contractor is General Atomics, 16969 Mesamint Street, San Diego, Calif., 92127. The contract was competitively procured under a Broad Agency Announcement (BAA). Due to the nature of the effort being research and development in new technologies, a cost plus fixed fee contract is contemplated. The Naval Sea Systems Command, Washington Navy Yard, D.C., is the contracting activity.
