Description
Battelle, Pacific Northwest Division, Management & Operating Contractor of the U.S. Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), is requesting information from prospective offers to provide: The environmental SEM (ESEM) along with the focused ion beam capability functionally includes computer-controlled ion-beam micromachining based on a liquid-metal ion source and high-resolution SEM imaging based on a field-emission-gun (FEG) electron source in various gas environments. Full functionality is required for automated sample sectioning with access to electron beam, ion beam, stage positioning (patterning) and gas injector control. The instrument shall be configured to perform these operations either simultaneously or independently, attended or unattended, at the operator's will. Typically, the electron and ion beams shall be integrated in one chamber to achieve this. ESEM/FIB scanning microscopes specifically designed to study wet, oil bearing, or insulating materials. Polymers, biological cells, plants, soil bacteria, concrete, wood, asphalt and liquid suspensions have been observed in the ESEM without prior specimen preparation or carbon, gold coating. Samples may be examined in water vapor or other gasses such as CO2 or N2 at near atmospheric pressures due to the unique vacuum system of the ESEM. Dynamic experiments should be able to be performed with the ESEM in wet mode with the heating capabilities up to at least 1500 degree C. The studies should be able to be conducted in pressures up to 5-10 Torr with various gases including air, O2, H2, NO, CO, CO2, etc. The system shall be fitted with an energy dispersive x-ray spectrometer (EDXS), wavelength dispersive spectrometer and EBSD Camera and software which are similar to Oxford Synergy 350 Premium and EBSD Software or EDAX and 3D OIM software system. This system shall possess the following mandatory specifications. Incorporation of this system with the FIB/SEM instrument is a must with the EDXS software should be able to generate phase maps and quant maps following the elemental mapping of a specific material (arbitrary line scans). The software should allow post-data collection re-processing and analysis of the spectral image data. Elemental maps should have the ability to be colored, as specified by the user, and software should be able to generate maps based on the raw data, net intensities, or background subtracted semi-quantitative data. Interested firms shall also provide information in the following areas as available: 1) A description of current experience, knowledge and capabilities directly applicable to the performance of the scope identified. 2) Brochures providing descriptions of equipment, maintenance and standard warranty, along with a current published commercial pricelist. This Request for Information (RFI) is part of a market research effort that will best address PNNL's needs. This RFI is issued for information and planning purposes only and does not constitute a solicitation. Battelle does not intend to award a contract on the basis of this RFI, or to otherwise pay for information received in response to this RFI. Please provide your expression of interest to the attention of the points of contact listed above. If you have questions or need additional information, they must also be submitted in writing to the points of contact.
