Description
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Procurement and Grants Office announces the upcoming release of the solicitation for Clinical Operations Services for Botswana off-site screening and enrollment clinics conducting a placebo controlled trial of the safety and efficacy of single daily oral dose of the antiretroviral (ARV) Truvada for the prevention of HIV infection among 1200 sexually active young adults in Botswana (referred to as TDF2 Trial). The anticipated period of performance will begin with Phase I: September 1, 2009 through March 31, 2010; Phase II: April 1, 2010 through March 31, 2011; April 1, 2011 through March 31, 2012 and Phase III: April 1, 2012 through September 30, 2012. Award is expected to be made on or before September 1, 2009. The purpose of this project is to operate a screening clinic in Francistown, Botswana and a screening and enrollment clinic in Gaborone, Botswana to enable BOTUSA, the CDC collaboration with the government of Botswana to complete a randomized, placebo controlled trial of the safety and efficacy of a single daily oral dose of the antiretroviral Truvada for the prevention of HIV infection conducted among sexually active adults aged 18-39 years in Botswana. The scope of activities will range from Phase I clinical trial screening and enrollment, Phase II clinical trial follow-up and Phase III Clinical Trial Analysis. CDC is sponsoring the HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) clinical trial in Botswana because safe and effective new approaches to HIV prevention are urgently needed. If proven safe and effective, PrEP could help address the urgent need for a female-controlled prevention method for women worldwide who are unable, because of cultural or other barriers, to negotiate condom use. Furthermore, if effective, it could provide an additional safety net for all men and women at risk when combined with reducing the number of sexual partners, HIV counseling and testing, condom use, and other prevention measures. All responsible qualified entities are invited to submit a proposal to be considered by the Government. The estimated release date of the solicitation is 5/12/2009 All interested parties must submit their request in writing to the Contracting Specialist, Nancy Lindsey at nel0@cdc.gov. All requests for a solicitation package must be made by email and should reference solicitation number 2009-N-11207.
