Description
Scanning Probe Infrared (IR) Spectroscopy System EMSL will be developing an instrument for spectroscopic infrared vibrational near-field nanoimaging that provides ultrahigh spatial resolution down to 10 nm, vibrational spectral information in the 700 to 5000 cm-1 (14 to 2 m) range, sensitivity down to the molecular level, and applicability under ambient and environmental conditions. The system will consists of a modified scanning probe microscope with variable sample temperature stage integrated into an optical setup with IR radiation directed by reflective optics onto the metallic tip of atomic force microscope (AFM) cantilever. The tip-scattered radiation will be detected in the backscattering direction and the near-field signal is extracted from the barf-field background by lock-in detection of the synchronized signal component with the tip dither frequency - preferably at a higher harmonic frequency to provide enhanced contrast due to the nonlinear distance dependence of the optical tip-sample coupling. The instrumentation will consist of a scanning tunneling microscope/atomic force microscope (STM/AFM), a laser system with average power of ca. 1 mW (continuous wave, quasi-continuous wave, i.e., pulses with high repetition rate), and tunability over a broad IR wavelength scale, and optics. The STM/SFM will be a commercial instrument and the laser system will consist of a coherent frequency doubled Nd:YVO4 laser (532 nm), a coherent femtosecond oscillator, a coherent optical parametric oscillator (OPO), an autocorrelator and supplementary optics for OPO, difference frequency generation (DFG) components and nonlinear optical crystals. Interested firms shall also provide information in the following areas as available: 1) A description of current experience, knowledge and capabilities directly applicable to the performance of the scope identified. 2) Brochures providing descriptions of equipment, maintenance and standard warranty, along with a current published commercial pricelist. This Request for Information (RFI) is part of a market research effort that will best address PNNL's needs. This RFI is issued for information and planning purposes only and does not constitute a solicitation. Battelle does not intend to award a contract on the basis of this RFI, or to otherwise pay for information received in response to this RFI. Please provide your expression of interest to the attention of the points of contact listed above. If you have questions or need additional information, they must also be submitted in writing to the points of contact.
